Welcome to

the first ever Cobalt League 1 vs. 1 Deathmatch Tournament!

All updates, information, rules and requirements of this contest will be posted here.
Please note that a lot of details are still being figured out and are subject to change.

First things first: Disclaimer!

Cobalt online multiplayer is a fairly new thing. Please consider this whole tournament as experimental - There might be crashes, lags & other inconveniences down the road. If it all works out, there will be many more Cobalt League tournaments following, featuring all kinds of gamemodes! Also don't forget to have fun!

Signing up and tournament dates

Sign-Ups are open until the tournament begins, and completely free. The Tournament will start at February 4, 2016, group matches can be played until February 12, 2016. After that, final stage (bracket) matches will be played.
Note that the groups will be shuffled before the tournament begins.

The goal is to play the (semi-)finals at the weekend of Feb 19-21 UTC. Please organize your matches as fast as possible so that we can achieve that goal. Round 2 matches are to be played until wednesday 17, round 3 matches until friday 19.

  • General Proceedings

There will be two stages of the tournament, a group stage and a final stage.

One group consists of four randomly chosen players. During the group stage, every player will compete against every other player in the same group in two standard deathmatch games (first to 10 points wins). That way, each player will have to play 3 * 2 = 6 games in the group stage.

The two best players in each group (measured by the total number of wins over all games, tiebraker is the number of kills) will qualify for the final stage.

Updated final stage rules:

In the final stage players will compete in a single elimination bracket.
For dealing with lag especially when players origin from different countries, the best of 3 or best of 5 model was discarded! Players will now compete against each other in a total of 4 games, with players taking turns to host the game. Should one player win three or four of those matches, then he will have won. Otherwise the kills each player made in the games are used as a tiebraker.
There is a small possibility that after 4 games, both the set wins and the kills of the players will be exactly equal (tied). In that case, two more games are to be played with the same rules.
The grand final as well as the game for 3rd place will be 6 matches.
  • Obviousnesses

No cheating or third party program assistance, must not be using modified Cobalt.

No surrender, no mercy.

Must play all maps to 10 points with developer’s choice items (default setup.) No bots allowed.

  • Organisation of Matches

Players are expected to organize group matches themselves and to finish all group matches before Sunday, February 12, 2016. The built-in Challonge messaging system can be used to directly message any participant. In addition, players are invited to join the Cobalt IRC (see below) for enhanced communication.

Players that fall behind in finishing their matches will of course receive reminders, constant nagging and further guidance from the moderators to get all matches finished in time.

  • Score submission and dropouts

The result of every match played must be reported by both players via the challonge match reporting system. Alternatively, you can just message me with the scores/kills of each player after the match. It is also strongly recommended that you screenshot the final result of each map and include that screenshot in your report.

About reporting scores: When reporting scores through the challonge match reporting system, please include 2 sets corresponding to the two games you played, and enter the kills scored by each player as points!

If both players send matching data the result will be recorded, else an investigation will be carried out by a moderator. If neither player sends in results, then the match is recorded as a loss for both players.

If a player cannot play the game or decided to drop out, they should notify the moderators and other players. If a player does not show up for a game, the other player must notify the moderators to claim this. If this happens and the player who did not show up does not respond swiftly they will be disqualified from the tournament. Players playing against a disqualified player in the final stage automatically win.

  • Lobby Setup & Map Selection

Players must both join a casual, private lobby to set up the match.

Because the host of a game always has a slight advantage, the players will take turns with hosting the lobby, except in fixtures being streamed, where the streamer will host the lobby. In best of 3 or best of 5 games, the player that is behind should host the 3rd / 5th match.

In the first match of a fixture, the players should flip a coin to decide who hosts first.

In general, every deathmatch map can be played in the tournament as long as both players agree on it. If no agreement can be made, one of the following maps has to be chosen:
  • Desert
  • Cannon Dungeon
  • Little House
  • Secret Hideout
  • Space Zone

In this case, players will take turns in excluding one of the maps until only one is left, which is the one that will be played.

You need to have Cobalt (on PC/Steam) . Apart from that, there are no requirements - Everyone can participate!

Yes, there will be prizes for the winners of this tournament! Prizes are:
